I am so excited to announce the first Backyard Adventure Camp.  If you’ve been reading the blog for any length of time, you know that one of the things I have always wanted to do is to hold a summer day camp at my home.  I am in love with teaching and have wanted to share the things I adore most in this world with a group of equally enthusiastic children.

While I am, by vocation, an English teacher, I am also a lover of all things wild and beautiful, so art and nature and being in the great outdoors rank right up there with what I feel called to share with students.

Our children no longer learn how to read
the great Book of Nature
form their own direct experience or how to interact creatively
with the seasonal transformations of the planet.
They seldom learn where their water comes from or where it goes.
We no longer coordinate our human celebration with
the great liturgy of the heavens.

What is Backyard Adventure Camp?

It’s a full week of backyard adventures, nature
play, creative arts and crafts, folk tales, animal care and country living skills.

What will be doing?

Well, among other things, we’ll be…

building forts
hunting bugs
making soap
harvesting and drying herbs and fruit
building a solar oven
composting and working in the garden
creating crazy art sculptures from “found” materials
making art journals
playing team building games
hearing and learning Native American and Appalachian folk tales
learning how to care for cats, dogs, goats, and mice
cooking our own food
studying the wild things around us

AND, of course, we’ll be making friends and messes!

Because we will be outside, rain or shine, and we will be painting, digging in the dirt, climbing trees, or any number of messy things, campers should wear an old t-shirt, quick dry shorts and shoes appropriate for said activities.  Flip-flops are not recommended.  Campers should also pack a swimsuit and towel because you just never know when a water fight might break out.

Snacks and special food will be provided,
but campers should bring a reusable water bottle and non-perishable lunch each day.  We will, however, be sampling lots of fresh produce and herbs, and there may be homemade s’more’s if we build our solar ovens correctly.

How old does a Backyard Adventure Camper need to be?

This camp is for anyone from age 6 to 12 who doesn’t mind a little dirt and sweat.

What is the tuition for Backyard Adventure Camp?

It is $125.00 for the whole week, but folks with multiple children should inquire about discounts for families.

How long does Backyard Adventure Camp run?

Camp begins on Monday, July 29 and runs through Friday, Aug. 2.
It is from 9:00 to 3:00 each day, Monday through Friday.
Later pick-up is available if needed.

In order to provide the best instruction possible, space is limited.
